FRANKSTON Pines were stiff not to have taken a point from their clash with championship hopefuls Altona Magic on Friday night with the local side succumbing 3-2 to the visitors.
Pines trailed 1-0 at the break after Michael Curcija seized on a goalkeeping error to give Magic a 1-0 lead going into the break.
Pece Siveski stretched Magic's lead to 2-0 after a penalty was awarded to the visitors shortly after the break before Andrew Skledar pegged one back for Pines in the 55th minute.
Former national league striker Henry Fa'Arodo then put Magic 3-1 up with 15 minutes remaining before Pines were awarded a penalty which Simon Mur made sure of after Magic's Bojo Jevdjevic saved the original strike.
Pines continued to pressure Magic for the remainder of the match but were unable to find the net and an equaliser despite a solid performance that betrayed their spot on the bottom of the table.
Langwarrin had a costly 3-1 loss to Sunshine Georgies at Lawton Park on Saturday with three Langy players and the opposition coach being sent off in this State League division 1 clash.
Langy was 1-1 at the break with Caleb Nicholes scoring for the home side and looked like running over the top of the table leaders before a number of controversial bookings thinned Langy's ranks.
Lirim Rasimi and Boris Ovcin were both shown two yellow cards but it was not until the Georgies players protested that the pair were sent from the field.
Simon O'Donnell's send off was a bit more straightforward when he retaliated after he was hit by an opponent.
The otherwise good-natured game was marred by the controversial decisions including a first half diving call on Shane Tagliaferro that many spectators believed should have been a penalty for Langy.
Langy coach Gus McLeod would not be drawn on the refereeing but he did call for reports by referees' inspectors to be made public.
"It may be a case where the club needs to re-educate its players on the interpretation of the rules and we need to see the inspectors' reports if we are to do that successfully,'' McLeod said.
In the State League SE division 2 Peninsula Strikers were also defeated, going down 2-1 to Diamond Valley with Luke Ventieri scoring for the Strikers.
An Alex Halikias hat-trick gave Mornington a 3-0 victory over Old Trinity at Dallas Brooks Park on Saturday in the Provisional SE division 2 to stretch the Gulls' lead of the competition to four points.
Such are the raised expectations at Mornington that the side slumped off the ground feeling that they could have added anther four or five goals to their tally.
Seaford relinquished its grip on the Provisional SE division 2 competition after going down 2-1 to the Bayside Argonauts on Saturday.
That competition is now wide open with just two games separating first and seventh place heading into the last seven games of the season.
